Please Read Before Buying
This page exists for one reason: so that when your rug arrives, there are no surprises. Not because we expect problems. But because a RUH RUG is not a standard purchase — and you deserve to know exactly what you are welcoming into your home before you decide.
Choosing Your Size
The most common mistake in buying a rug is going too small.
A rug that is too small floats in the middle of a room and makes the space feel unfinished. A
rug that is correctly sized anchors the room and makes everything around it feel deliberate.
Living room — all front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug, or all legs of all
furniture should sit fully on it. Either works. No legs on the rug does not.
Dining room — the rug should extend at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides, so chairs
remain on the rug when pulled out.
Bedroom — place under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending at least 50cm on both
sides. You step onto rug, not floor, when you get up in the morning.
Hallway or passage — width should leave 15-20cm of floor visible on each side. Length
should run the full passage or stop intentionally before a threshold.
If you are unsure — cut newspaper to your intended dimensions and lay it on your floor for a
day before you order. You will know immediately if it is right.
We offer custom sizes. If none of our standard dimensions fit your space, contact us before
ordering.
Choosing Your Construction
RUH RUG offers hand-knotted rugs from natural wool and cotton. Here is what that means
for your home, honestly.
Hand-knotted natural wool is dense, warm underfoot, and built to last decades. In the first
weeks it will feel firm — wool needs time and footfall to soften. By month three it will feel
entirely different to the day it arrived. This is not a flaw. This is how wool behaves.
It will compress in areas of heavy use — in front of a sofa, at the entrance to a room. This
compression is patina, not damage. It is the rug recording your life.
Natural wool has lanolin — a slight natural resistance to dirt and moisture. It does not need
chemical treatment. It needs occasional vacuuming without a beater bar, and professional
washing every few years.
Where This Rug Does Not Belong
A RUH RUG is not the right choice for every space. We would rather tell you this now.
These rugs are not suitable for:
• Outdoor areas or covered patios exposed to moisture
• Bathrooms, kitchens, or any space with regular water on the floor
• Homes with heavy pet traffic where scratch resistance is a daily requirement
• Anyone who needs stain-proof performance — natural wool resists, but does not
repel
If your space falls into any of these categories, we will tell you honestly when you enquire.
We would rather lose a sale than have you disappointed.
Understanding Natural Variation
No two RUH RUG pieces are identical. This is not a quality control issue. It is the nature of
handcraft.
Colour variation — natural undyed wool carries the variation of the animal and the season.
What appears cream in one light will appear warm ivory in another. This is not inconsistency.
It is honesty.
Edge variation — hand-knotted edges are finished by hand. They will not be perfectly
straight. Over time, edges relax further as the rug settles. This is normal.
Surface variation — you may notice areas where the pile sits slightly differently. Run your
hand across the rug in different directions — the pile will respond differently. This is the work
itself.
If you need exact colour matching, exact symmetry, or a rug that looks machine-produced —
RUH RUG is not the right choice for you. We say this not to discourage you but to save both
of us the trouble of a mismatch.
What It Will Cost and Why
A RUH RUG costs what it costs because of what it takes to make it.
A standard 2x3m hand-knotted rug requires approximately 300-400 hours of skilled human
labour across spinning, warping, knotting, washing, stretching, clipping, and finishing. The
artisan who made it was paid fairly — not minimised. The material is natural, not synthetic.
There are no shortcuts in this process.
We do not inflate prices to create room for discounts. There are no sales. The price you see
is the price it costs to make this rug honestly and sustain the families who made it.
“Give the worker his wage before his sweat dries.” — Ibn Majah 2443
If you find a hand-knotted natural wool rug significantly cheaper elsewhere, ask what was
shortened in the making.
Delivery and What to Expect
Standard sizes ship in 6-8 weeks from order confirmation. Custom sizes ship in 8-12 weeks
from approved design. We ship worldwide from Bhadohi, India.
Your rug arrives rolled and wrapped. When you unroll it:
It may sit unevenly for a few days as the wool relaxes from being compressed during
transport. Place it flat, allow 3-5 days, and it will settle. Furniture weight helps.
It may appear slightly different from photographs. Screen colours vary. Natural wool under
your home’s light will look different from a product photograph taken in Bhadohi. This is
unavoidable. It is not misrepresentation.
It will smell faintly of natural wool. This fades within days in a ventilated room.
If Something Is Wrong
If your rug arrives with structural damage — contact us within 7 days with photographs. We
will assess and resolve it.
If you simply change your mind — contact us. We will have a human conversation about
your specific situation. We do not hide behind a policy when someone has a genuine
problem.
We offer lifetime structural repair for all RUH RUG pieces. Objects made by hand should be
mendable by hand. A rug that can be repaired is a rug that lasts a lifetime.
